South Australian International Vocational, Education and Training (VET) Graduates now considered for State Nominations

Effective from 23 December 2014, Immigration SA is including VET graduates as part of the state sponsorship programme for skilled migration visas subclass 190 and 489.  To be eligible VET graduates of South Australia will need to be:

• Currently working for 12 months or more in their nominated or closely related occupation in South Australia (minimum 20 hours per week); OR
• Currently working for 6 months or more in their nominated or closely related occupation in a country region of South Australia (minimum 20 hours per week). The country region must be outside of Greater Adelaide.

The country region of South Australia is defined by postcode and you can explore the country regions on the Immigration SA website here.

What does this mean for you?

The expansion of the graduate list means that there are more opportunities for non-bachelor degree graduates to apply for permanent residence in South Australia.  To find out if the new changes are an opportunity for you, visit the Immigration SA website or contact us via the details below.

Immigration SA has added 18 new occupations t the State Occupation list including some very common occupations – Cook, Hairdresser, Customer Service Manager and Database Administrator.

This is a major change and provides opportunities for persons all over Australia and from overseas as well.

“The South Australian Government, in collaboration with local industry, regularly conducts research to identify skill needs in the local labour market.

Immigration SA is the State Government agency responsible for international migration to South Australia.  We offer pathways to permanent residency for skilled migrants who have occupations that are in-demand.

South Australia’s occupation lists are live.  Any changes made to the lists are visible immediately, enabling you to see which occupations are currently available for state nomination.

The table below details eighteen new occupations added to the State Occupation list.

The new occupation lists

There are now two state nomination occupation list for South Australia:  the State Occupation list and the South Australian Graduate list.  

• Occupations on the State Occupation list are available to all applicants including South Australian international graduates.
• The South Australian Graduate list, previously known as the off list, is for graduates who have completed a Bachelor degree or higher in South Australia.
• The subscription functionality enables you to stay up to date with changes to the occupation lists and the news and events page as changes occur.
• The details of the relevant skills assessment authority for each occupation is now included in the lists.

Remember, to be eligible for state nomination applicants must have a positive skills assessment from the relevant authority for their nominated occupation.  Applicants must also meet all of the federal and state requirements for the visa being applying for.”

Immigration SA has released the following information:

“New professions added to the State Nominated Occupation List

From 2 September 2013, the following occupations have been added to the State Nominated Occupation List (SNOL):

•    Procurement Manager
•    Registered Nurse (Paediatric)

ICT occupations

From 2 September 2013, the “Special Conditions Apply” status has been removed for all On-list ICT occupations and there will be a limited number of places available for South Australian State Nomination. The IELTS requirement for all ICT occupations is 6.5 in each band score.

Occupations close to reaching DIAC national ceiling

Six occupation groups are close to reaching the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) national ceiling and DIAC have allocated a limited number of places for State and Territory nomination for the rest of the 2013/14 program year. Once South Australia has reached the state quota in an occupation group listed below, Immigration SA will be unable to nominate any more applicants (including SA international graduates) for the remainder of the 2013/14 program year.

The six occupation groups with a limited number of places available for SA state nomination are:

• 2331 Chemical and Materials Engineers
• 2611 ICT Business and Systems Analysts
• 2334 Electronics Engineers
• 2633 Telecommunication Engineering Professionals
• 2339 Other Engineering Professionals
• 2613 Software and Applications Programmers

Due to the limited number of places, Immigration SA will prioritise applications who meet all Immigration SA eligibility requirements as follows:

1.     Currently employed in a skilled occupation in SA

2.     An international Graduate of SA  

3.     High calibre offshore or onshore applicants (Immigration SA will take into account: DIAC points, qualifications, work experience and English level when assessing an application for these occupation groups).

Please note that for occupations subject to a DIAC occupation ceiling management process, Immigration SA reserves the right to process applicants by merit rather than by date submitted.“

Peer Review is no longer required by the RCB Immigration SA for the first stage of the RSMS process. This change was introduced from 24 June 2013.

Immigration SA posted the following on their blog:

“A recent review has identified the following changes to the RCB application process:

• Removal of peer review - effective immediately
• Simplified assessment questions
• Extensively reduced evidence requirements
• Quicker application process”

Peer Review required a letter from an employment agent or industry body or Union about not being able to fill the position.  It was very unpopular with employers, who often chose not to proceed with the RSMS process. 

Immigration SA has announced changes to their off-list sponsorship criteria:

“Changes include: (these apply to applicants living and working in South Australia only)

• - All international graduates of South Australia will be considered; nomination is no longer restricted to students who graduated within the last six months.
• - Applicants who have completed a vocational education and training (VET) or higher education qualification in South Australia with a minimum duration of one academic year (or CRICOSregistered for a minimum of 46 weeks).
• - Students who have completed a PhD or Masters by Research qualification in South Australia, no longer require work experience if they have an IELTS score of 7.5 overall or 7.0 in each band.”

Changes will only apply until 30 June, 2013. 

Due to the short timeframe, the above changes for the off-list  will be most suitable for persons who already have a full skills assessment in a vocational occupation, such as a Nurseryperson.

IELTS Validity extended from two to three years:

Other changes include that Immigration SA will now accept IELTS results which are three-years-old or less on the state nomination decision date
